The United Arab Emirates has officially denied reports that its president, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, warned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of an impending Hamas attack before October 7. The UAE stated that security matters are discussed between relevant officials, not directly between heads of state.
This official denial from Abu Dhabi counters claims made in an investigative report by the Israeli newspaper Haaretz. Haaretz had alleged that bin Zayed spoke with Netanyahu for 45 minutes, warning him about a major Hamas operation. The report further claimed that Netanyahu received this information but failed to pass it on to the relevant security authorities.
Following the Haaretz report, Netanyahu's office issued a strong rebuttal, calling the allegations "complete fiction, baseless fantasy, and malicious misrepresentation." Netanyahu demanded that Haaretz remove the article from all platforms and publish a prominent apology and retraction, a demand the newspaper has not met.
Haaretz has stood by its report, asserting it is a "deep and sourced journalistic investigation" and that its journalists "will not be deterred from revealing the truth, even in court." The newspaper's lawyers argued that Netanyahu's demands were an attempt to "silence journalistic criticism."
