Mass Selichot Prayer at Western Wall Tonight; Public Transport Enhanced

A central Selichot (penitential prayers) service will be held tonight at the Western Wall Plaza on the eve of Yom Kippur, with tens of thousands of worshippers expected to attend from across Israel. To accommodate the large crowds, the Ministry of Transportation and the "Egged" bus company have announced significant enhancements to public transportation services. Several bus lines, including routes 1 and 3, will operate throughout the night, with additional service on lines 111, 222, and 333. The L1 light rail line will also run all night to facilitate access to the Western Wall. Free "Park and Ride" lots will be available at the Givat Mivtar and Har Herzl light rail stations for commuters.

This extensive public transport operation aims to ease the journey for the thousands of worshippers and reduce reliance on private vehicles. In conjunction with the event, traffic around the Old City will be restricted for private vehicles, though vehicles with disabled permits will be allowed entry via Zion Gate from Hebron Road. Recent improvements to accessibility, including the recent rerouting of bus access through the Dung Gate in the early morning hours, are expected to particularly benefit elderly worshippers and those with disabilities.

Last year, approximately 100,000 people participated in the main Selichot service at the Western Wall, which included a live broadcast connecting the site to Hostages Square in Tel Aviv. The enhanced transportation arrangements are designed to ensure a smooth and convenient experience for attendees of this significant pre-Yom Kippur religious gathering.
