Gaza Artists Honor Macklemore With Mural Amid Rubble

Two local artists in Gaza have created a mural depicting American rapper Macklemore, draped in a Palestinian flag, on a concrete slab amidst the destruction. The artwork serves as a thank you to the musician for his vocal support of Palestine, particularly after he was reportedly excluded from a UK pop star Ed Sheeran's upcoming US tour. The mural shows Macklemore, known for his song "Thrift Shop," with a raised fist and the message "Thank you for using your voice for Palestine."

One of the artists, 26-year-old Ann Radwan, explained that she and her colleague Qusai Al-Helou wanted to express their gratitude to Macklemore in a simple way. "We wanted to send a thank you message to the artist Macklemore in this simple way, that we can draw him," she told Reuters, adding that they salvaged a wall from the rubble for the artwork. She also stated, "We as artists who have lived under siege here in Gaza have been waiting for support from anyone who sees the oppression we are living in, so that we can draw bigger murals and express our inner feelings."

Macklemore, a consistent supporter of Palestinian causes, was allegedly removed from Sheeran's tour lineup due to his on-stage criticism of Israel's military actions in Gaza, which began after Hamas-led attacks on Israel in October 2023. Sheeran stated that stadium owners refused to allow Macklemore to perform. American billionaire Robert Kraft, owner of Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts, confirmed he barred Macklemore due to alleged antisemitism, a claim the rapper denies.
