Gaza Artists Honor Rapper Macklemore With Mural Amid Anti-Israel Statements

A large mural depicting American rapper Macklemore, known for his strong anti-Israel statements, has appeared among the destroyed buildings in Gaza City. The artwork, painted on a concrete slab amidst rubble, shows Macklemore with a raised fist, draped in a Palestinian flag, and bears the inscription "Thank you for using your voice for Palestine." Reuters reported that the mural was created by artists Ann Radwan and Qusai al-Khelou. The portrait of the new "hero of the Palestinian people" emerged days after Macklemore was removed from the U.S. leg of Ed Sheeran's tour.

Ann Radwan, 26, stated that the artists wanted to thank Macklemore in a simple way and expressed hope that prominent figures would continue to speak out about the situation in Gaza. The mural's appearance coincides with a controversy surrounding Macklemore's participation in Sheeran's tour. Earlier in September, during a performance at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, Macklemore urged the audience to support Palestine and performed his anti-Israel song "Hind's Hall," which criticizes the IDF's actions in Gaza and the police response to pro-Palestinian student protests in the U.S.

Following this, Macklemore was excluded from the remainder of the U.S. tour dates. Ed Sheeran explained that he could not keep Macklemore on the program after stadium owners refused to allow his performance, clarifying that the decision was made by the tour promoter, not himself. New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft stated that Macklemore's performance was canceled due to public displays of antisemitism, a claim the rapper denies.

The incident and subsequent scandal have brought Macklemore significant global attention, positioning him at the center of an international political discussion. He announced he would donate $1 million in earnings from his unfinished tour with Sheeran to six organizations aiding Gaza residents. Children's television host Ms. Rachel later pledged to match this donation, and Sheeran reportedly informed Kraft of his intention to donate $2 million to the region. What began as a music industry dispute has evolved into a widespread international campaign, with Macklemore making his political stance a core part of his public image and attracting an audience far beyond the music world.
