Israel Prepares for Yom Kippur 2026: Observances, Closures, and Security

Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, is the holiest day in Judaism, observed in Israel in 2026 starting the evening of Sunday, September 20, and concluding on the evening of Monday, September 21. This 25-hour period is marked by fasting, prayer, and a near-complete cessation of public life.

During Yom Kippur, public transportation, including buses and trains, halts operations, and Ben Gurion Airport closes. Most businesses and institutions, except for emergency services, also shut down. Radio, television, and news websites typically cease broadcasting, with exceptions made only for critical situations. The holiday's observance includes a strict 25-hour fast from food and water, refraining from bathing, using cosmetics, wearing leather shoes, and engaging in marital relations. Driving is considered highly inappropriate.

In Israel, the roads, usually bustling with traffic, become quiet and are often filled with children and adults cycling. Publicly violating Yom Kippur customs, such as eating or driving openly, is frowned upon even by secular Israelis. Israelis traditionally exchange greetings like "Gmar chatima tova" (May you be sealed for a good year) and "Tzom kal" (Have an easy fast), and ask for forgiveness from those they may have wronged.

Special preparations are made for the pre-fast meal, "seudah mafseket," to help sustain individuals through the fast. Hydration is emphasized, with recommendations to drink plenty of water and avoid caffeine and overly salty foods. The meal typically includes protein, complex carbohydrates, and healthy fats. Religious services throughout the day include the unique evening prayer "Kol Nidre" before sunset, followed by morning, afternoon, and the concluding "Neilah" service, often ending with the blowing of the shofar.

Security measures will be heightened, with a closure order in effect for Palestinians from Judea, Samaria, and Gaza. Increased security personnel will be present in cities, particularly around large prayer gatherings, due to terror threat concerns. Emergency services, including Magen David Adom (MDA), are on high alert, with MDA anticipating over 2,000 calls, primarily for injuries sustained during recreational activities like cycling. Police are also operating in an intensified mode to maintain order.
