US Grants Visas to Iranian Leaders, Denies Abbas for Second Year

The United States has approved visas for Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to attend the upcoming United Nations General Assembly in New York. This decision comes despite ongoing tensions and mutual threats between the US and Iran.

In contrast, Washington has denied a visa request from Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas, also known as Abu Mazen, for the second consecutive year. The State Department stated that the visas for Iran were for the "core delegation" and indicated that the Iranian mission would be smaller than last year and subject to travel restrictions, including limitations on purchasing luxury goods and restricting movement to essential areas.

The Palestinian Authority accused the State Department of "internationalizing" the conflict with Israel by pursuing actions in international courts and failing to implement reforms. The US cited the PA's failure to implement reforms, its ongoing actions undermining peace prospects, and its support for Palestinian prisoners as reasons for the denial.

Despite the visa denial, the existing exemption for staff at the Palestinian Permanent Observer Mission to the UN will remain in effect. The Palestinian Authority criticized the decision, calling it punitive and counterproductive to peace efforts, arguing it encourages forces seeking to undermine the two-state solution.

Reuters reported that the 193 members of the General Assembly will vote on whether to allow Abbas to deliver a recorded statement, a procedure that occurred last year. Previously, Abbas had reportedly appealed to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to intervene with President Trump to reverse the decision, but the administration indicated it would not change its stance.
