Health Ministry Warns Against Swimming in Northern Israel Streams Due to Contamination
Israel's Ministry of Health issued a severe warning to the public on Tuesday evening, advising against entering the water in numerous streams and nature sites in northern Israel. This advisory comes after abnormal results were found in recent water quality tests conducted in the region.
According to the ministry's announcement, samples taken from the streams revealed high concentrations of fecal coliform bacteria, an indicator of potential contamination in the water sources. This contamination poses a health risk to hikers and swimmers.
Consequently, the public is urged to avoid entering the water at the affected sites, which include the Hatzbani River, Jordan River, Meshushim Pool, Jilabun Stream, Yehudiya Stream, Zavitan Stream, Zaki Stream, El Al Stream, Tsalmon Stream, and Keziv Stream.
The Ministry of Health clarified that the warning will remain in effect until new tests confirm that water quality has returned to stable, normal levels. Until then, direct contact with the water, including swimming or wading, at these locations could expose the public to health risks.
These routine tests are performed across Israel's water sources and tourist sites to identify potential public health hazards. When bacteria levels exceed permissible limits, an advisory is issued pending further sampling and confirmation that the contamination has cleared. Travelers planning visits to northern nature trails and sites are advised to check official announcements before heading out and to adhere to the guidelines until the warning is lifted.
