Trump Faces 'Big Decision' on Escalating Conflict with Iran

President Donald Trump told Israel's Channel 12 News that he faces a "big decision" regarding whether to resume a large-scale war with Iran. "Everything can happen with me," Trump stated, ahead of a crucial meeting with Persian Gulf leaders next week in New York. He declined to specify if this decision would be made before or after the U.S. midterm elections.

Trump's remarks come as he prepares to meet with leaders from six Gulf states on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. While Trump has recently suggested the conflict was nearing an end, some U.S. officials believe he might opt for renewed large-scale military action post-midterm elections if no agreement is reached. Such a move would likely require the support of U.S. allies in the region.

Trump expressed a desire to hear directly from these allies about the next steps in the conflict, stating, "I want to understand where they stand and how they are doing. We have protected them very much." He reiterated the gravity of the decision, saying, "I have a big decision to make. Do I want to go in and finish them [the Iranian regime] or not. That is a big decision."

In early August, Trump refrained from escalating military action after Saudi Arabia and Qatar voiced concerns about potential Iranian retaliation against their oil and gas facilities. Since then, his approach has been more measured, involving suspended negotiations, new economic sanctions, a naval blockade of Iranian ports, and efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and increase global oil flow. Despite these measures, oil exports remain below pre-war levels, and prices are high.

U.S. military leaders have been instructed to maintain current force levels in the Middle East through the end of the year to preserve readiness for potential large-scale military operations. Senior officials noted that a decision is needed soon, as the military cannot remain in a prolonged state of readiness. Trump also indicated satisfaction with the naval blockade, claiming no ships have reached Iran since its inception and that Iran is still seeking an agreement.

The White House is also developing a post-conflict strategy focused on regional efforts to contain Iran and expand normalization between Israel and its neighbors. This strategy, still in its early stages, aims to shape U.S. policy in the Middle East for the remainder of Trump's term. Key upcoming events, including Israeli elections on October 27 and U.S. midterm elections in November, loom over these planning processes.

When asked about a potential meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in New York, Trump responded, "I may meet him."
