Channel 14 Faces Lawsuit Over Sara Netanyahu Interview

Lawyers for Eyal Geller have sent a pre-lawsuit notice to Channel 14, its editor-in-chief Yoram Cohen, and presenter Tal Meir, alleging that statements made by Sara Netanyahu during a recent interview falsely implied that individuals who set trash cans on fire during a protest intended to kill the Prime Minister and his family. The interview, which was pre-recorded and edited, aired on September 16. In the letter, Geller's lawyers claim that Netanyahu's remarks, in response to a question about threats to her life and her children's lives, suggested that setting tires and barrels ablaze around their home was an attempt to cause their deaths by suffocation or fire. Netanyahu was quoted as saying, "Bombs were thrown at our house. What more do you need than that? In many previous cases, the police and security forces found tires and barrels placed around the house to ignite them, with us inside." She added, "It was a circle of fire around our house, so that everyone would suffocate perhaps and die. And not just us; I understood that it harmed other people. The intention was really to kill."

The lawyers argue that these statements misrepresented a protest event where trash cans were set alight several streets away from the Prime Minister's residence. They contend this protest was part of broader demonstrations calling for the return of hostages from Gaza, which included rallies and displays. The lawyers assert that the interview's broadcast, especially given it was pre-recorded and reviewed by the channel's editorial staff, constituted a conscious editorial decision. They also highlighted the interview's wide reach, noting it was viewed by over 146,000 viewers in real-time and further disseminated on social media, reaching hundreds of thousands across Israel.
