Sweden Expels Iranian Diplomat Over Security Threats

Sweden has expelled an Iranian diplomat, citing activities incompatible with the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. The Swedish Minister of Justice, Gunnar Strömmer, stated that Iran has been engaged in activities posing a threat to national security for a long time, targeting opponents of the Iranian regime, as well as Jewish and Israeli interests within Sweden. Stockholm is particularly concerned about Iran's alleged use of local criminal networks for these purposes. The Swedish Security Service (Säpo) echoed these concerns, noting Iran's ongoing security threats.

The expulsion comes amid heightened fears of potential actions against targets associated with Israel and the Jewish community, especially in light of recent events in the Middle East. While Swedish authorities have not publicly linked the expelled diplomat to specific attack preparations, Säpo has not disclosed the intelligence behind the decision. Previous Swedish government reports have indicated that Iranian intelligence and security forces gather information on regime opponents and utilize criminal networks as intermediaries for violent acts.

Tehran responded swiftly on September 17, summoning the Swedish ambassador and demanding the expulsion of a Swedish diplomat. Iran characterized Stockholm's initial move as unjustified and lodged a broader protest against Swedish policy, accusing the country of offensive rhetoric and providing space for groups Iran deems terrorist organizations.
