France Summons Iranian Embassy Official After Arrest of French Diplomats in Tehran

France summoned the Iranian embassy's head of relations to the French Foreign Ministry on Tuesday following the detention of two French embassy staff members in Iran. On Monday evening, French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian announced that the two French diplomats were arrested by Iranian security forces for several hours, interrogated, and that one was physically assaulted. Both diplomats were eventually released and returned safely to the embassy, awaiting repatriation to France in the coming hours.

Le Drian condemned the Iranian security forces' actions as illegal and a violation of diplomatic immunity. He described the incident as a "serious and unacceptable breach" and warned that it would have consequences. The French Foreign Minister also conveyed these concerns directly to his Iranian counterpart. This diplomatic tension follows other recent regional developments involving France, including secret meetings between French officials and Hamas leaders and the death of a French soldier in a Hezbollah attack in Lebanon.
