Netanyahu's Lawyers Seek Testimony From Former Attorney General Ahead of Election
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's defense team has requested that former Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit be summoned to testify in his ongoing trial, just days before a general election. Mandelblit, who approved the opening of investigations against Netanyahu, has not yet testified in the case.
The request comes in the wake of an interview given by former Bar Association Chairman Efi Naveh to i24NEWS several months ago. In the interview, Naveh described a close relationship with Mandelblit and claimed the former Attorney General did not convey a belief in the strength of the cases against Netanyahu in real-time.
Naveh stated that Mandelblit expressed admiration for Netanyahu and downplayed the significance of Case 2000, involving alleged dealings between Netanyahu and a newspaper publisher, describing it as "two people arguing over who has a bigger one." Naveh also claimed Mandelblit did not view Case 1000, concerning alleged gifts to Netanyahu, as particularly significant.
According to Naveh, he directly asked Mandelblit if he truly believed Netanyahu had committed offenses. Mandelblit reportedly never stated that he thought Netanyahu was guilty, Naveh asserted. Naveh's interview, which touched upon his relationship with Mandelblit and the Netanyahu cases, was described as opening a "legal Pandora's box."
