Netanyahu's Lawyers Seek Former Attorney General Mandelblit's Testimony
Attorneys for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have requested that former Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit testify for seven days in October, shortly before the upcoming elections. The defense team argues that Mandelblit did not grant the necessary approvals for Netanyahu's investigation. Mandelblit previously stated to the court that the approvals were lawfully given.
In February 2021, the defense sought to dismiss the indictment on these grounds, citing a "defense from justice" argument. However, the judges rejected this request after the prosecution presented minutes from meetings where Mandelblit orally approved the investigation's commencement. Despite this, the judges criticized the lack of a written approval for opening the investigation.
Earlier this week, the defense also requested the testimony of former Knesset member Eitan Cabel, but he is currently unavailable due to reserve military duty.
