Ed Sheeran and Stadium Owner Match $2 Million Donation Amid Controversy
Billionaire and Jewish-American owner of Gillette Stadium, Robert Kraft, announced he will match a $2 million donation from musician Ed Sheeran for humanitarian aid in the region. This announcement comes amid a global controversy surrounding the removal of pro-Palestinian rapper Macklemore from Sheeran's tour. Hours earlier, Macklemore had urged Kraft to match his own $1 million donation.
Kraft clarified that he chose to match Sheeran's larger sum, stating, "I have dedicated a significant part of my life to building bridges between all people. I deeply believe that all lives are worthy of protection. Our goal is to continue to work together to build bridges." He added that he has worked for decades to promote opportunities for Palestinians and connect them with Israelis.
The current controversy began on September 4th at MetLife Stadium, where Macklemore called for "Free Palestine" and performed his song "Hind's Hall," dedicated to Hind Rajab, a child who died in Gaza and whose death has been attributed to the IDF. The following day, facing strong condemnation, Macklemore addressed his audience, saying, "My Jewish brothers and sisters, criticism of Israel, criticism of apartheid, opposition to genocide is in no way criticism of you."
Macklemore claimed earlier this week that Sheeran removed him from the "Loop Tour" due to an "ultimatum" from Kraft and other stadium owners who refused to host the show. Kraft, however, denied these accusations, attributing his actions to Macklemore's "broader history of antisemitic rhetoric and imagery" and invited the rapper for a private meeting.
The dispute has already caused immediate damage, leading to the withdrawal of all remaining opening acts for the tour, including Aaron Rowe, Finneas, and Lukas Graham, as well as Sheeran's regular backing band, Beoga. Sheeran is now attempting to stabilize the tour by reaching out to other stadium owners to raise funds for the humanitarian crisis, while the US music industry remains abuzz over the situation.
