Ed Sheeran Loses Backup Acts Over Palestinian Support Controversy

Several artists and the band Beoga, who were part of British musician Ed Sheeran's American tour, have withdrawn in solidarity with rapper Macklemore. Macklemore was reportedly removed from the tour lineup due to his public statements supporting Palestine and criticizing the situation there. Among those who left are Finneas, brother of Billie Eilish, who stated that artists should not face censorship for defending the oppressed and declared his support for Palestine. Irish singer Aaron Row also cited Ireland's historical experience and his inability to continue if billionaires silence pro-Palestinian voices. Danish group Lukas Graham and its frontman Lukas Forhammer also expressed that financial influence should not dictate who can speak about suffering. The departure of Beoga, Sheeran's live backing band, is considered a significant blow. The band stated they left after Macklemore was "silenced" and also voiced their support for Palestinians, emphasizing their belief in dialogue for peace.

Ed Sheeran himself addressed the situation, clarifying that he did not expel Macklemore. He explained that he attempted to mediate between Macklemore, the promoter, and the venues but was unsuccessful. Sheeran posted that he uses his platform to unite people of all backgrounds and that his shows are meant for unity, joy, and escapism, not politics. He acknowledged having personal views on the conflict but prefers not to engage politically in his professional capacity, especially given his young audience. Sheeran believes in diverse approaches to achieving peace and aims to keep dialogue open, rather than closed, by maintaining his platform as a safe space.

However, Sheeran's stance did not resonate with some, including Roger Waters. Waters, known for his anti-Israel views, reportedly called Sheeran a "little prick" for allowing Macklemore's removal from the tour.
