Hyundai Ioniq 6 Facelift Challenges Chinese EVs with Improved Range and Tech
Hyundai has reintroduced the Ioniq 6 electric sedan to the Israeli market following a significant facelift and a price reduction of approximately NIS 20,000. The updated model aims to compete in a segment increasingly dominated by Chinese manufacturers and the Tesla Model 3.
The Ioniq 6 receives exterior updates including slimmer LED headlights and a revised rear spoiler, maintaining its distinctive, aerodynamic design. Inside, Hyundai has addressed previous criticisms by upgrading interior materials, adding physical buttons for key functions, and enhancing the ambient lighting. The cabin offers generous space, particularly for rear legroom and width, though headroom is slightly compromised by the sloping roofline. Both base and premium trims feature dual 12.3-inch screens for infotainment and the instrument cluster, with improved graphics and user-friendly controls, making it one of the most accessible electric cars for new EV adopters.
Key technological upgrades include a larger 84 kWh battery (80 kWh net capacity), up from the previous 77 kWh, and an enhanced 800-volt architecture enabling a peak fast-charging rate of 263 kW. This allows the Ioniq 6 to charge from 10% to 80% in just 18 minutes. The base model boasts a manufacturer-claimed range of 680 km, while the higher trim offers 624 km. Real-world testing yielded approximately 500 km on a mixed driving cycle.
Performance is adequate with 228 horsepower driving the rear wheels, achieving 0-100 km/h in 7.4 seconds. While not overtly sporty, the driving experience is comfortable and refined, with improved noise insulation. Safety features are comprehensive, including adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and a 5-star Euro NCAP safety rating from 2022.
Despite the price reduction, the Ioniq 6 remains more expensive than some Chinese competitors. However, its strengths lie in its superior human-machine interface, spacious interior, and impressive real-world range, differentiating it from rivals that often rely heavily on large touchscreens. The updated Ioniq 6 is positioned as a practical, intelligent, and easy-to-operate electric sedan.
