Israeli Released From Iraqi Prison After Decade, Death Sentence

The story · English

Benjamin Hasin, an Israeli citizen born in Iraqi Kurdistan, was released from prison in Iraq on Tuesday after more than ten years of incarceration. Hasin immigrated to Israel as a child and returned to Iraq in 2014 to visit his grandparents. During the war against ISIS, he joined Kurdish forces.

In 2015, an altercation occurred with a taxi driver who overheard Hasin speaking Hebrew and threatened to turn him over to ISIS. The driver was injured and subsequently died, leading to Hasin's arrest. In 2020, he was sentenced to death by hanging.

In November 2025, a reconciliation was reached with the taxi driver's family following the payment of approximately $250,000, raised through donations. This payment led to the cancellation of his death sentence. Hasin is expected to return to Israel soon.
