The Israeli basketball season officially kicks off this Thursday with the Social Super Cup game between rivals Maccabi Tel Aviv and Hapoel Tel Aviv. The two teams, who met in a dramatic finals series last season that saw Maccabi clinch the double, are set to face off again after a period of preparation games. The league chairman, Ari Steinberg, emphasized the importance of continuing the season despite the challenges of the past year, stating that basketball is a vital part of life and that the league aims not only to survive but to improve.

Maccabi Tel Aviv coach Oded Katash commented on the addition of Yam Madar to his roster, a player he faced in the previous finals. Katash noted that Madar performs best when he is enjoying the game and focused, acknowledging that both teams are still in the early stages of the season and not yet at peak performance. He added that Madar's familiarity with Hapoel Tel Aviv doesn't provide a significant advantage beyond his presence on the team.

Hapoel Tel Aviv coach Dimitris Itoudis expressed pride in opening the season against a strong opponent like Maccabi. While acknowledging the desire for more preparation time before the EuroLeague season begins, he welcomed the opportunity to play in Israel. Itoudis also reflected on his past relationship with Katash, whom he coached previously, calling him one of the best basketball minds.

Itoudis addressed questions about Tamir Blatt's status, mentioning a conversation with the player about his injury and a lengthy absence, with future strategy to be determined soon.
