Maccabi Tel Aviv, Hapoel Tel Aviv Ready for Super Cup Clash

The Israeli Basketball Super Cup will kick off tomorrow at Menora Mivtachim Arena, featuring a highly anticipated derby between reigning champions Maccabi Tel Aviv and their city rivals, Hapoel Tel Aviv. Both teams participated in pre-season tournaments and are now set to compete for more than just a trophy.

This marks Hapoel Tel Aviv's first home game of the season before they return to Bulgaria for EuroLeague preparations. Both Maccabi and Hapoel will join the Winner Cup in early October, after playing three EuroLeague games.

At the traditional pre-game press conference, Maccabi Tel Aviv coach Oded Katash acknowledged the challenges Hapoel presented last season, noting the acquisition of Yam Madar. He stated, "Hapoel Tel Aviv has one of the most impressive rosters in the EuroLeague." Katash also commented on Madar's transition, saying, "I am very happy he is with us. The fact that he was at Hapoel Tel Aviv doesn't change much; both teams know each other well. Beyond the fact that we have him, I don't think it gives us an advantage over them."

Hapoel Tel Aviv coach Dimitris Itoudis expressed pride in opening the season against Maccabi and wished for more preparation time. "We know what we represent and we want to win the cup," he said. Regarding Tamir Blatt's injury, Itoudis mentioned, "Unfortunately, he will not be with us for a number of weeks." He also addressed fan attendance, stating, "We can only do our best to make the team look as good as possible and bring enjoyment to the fans."

Both coaches reflected on their past association at Panathinaikos, with Itoudis calling Katash "a player who was very comfortable to coach, a great talent," and Katash expressing "a lot of appreciation for Itoudis."

Ari Steinberg, chairman of the Premier League administration, highlighted the significance of the derby to open the season, especially after a difficult past year marked by war and uncertainty. He emphasized the league's efforts to enhance competitiveness, fan experience, and facilities, aiming to bring Israeli basketball back to prominence in Europe.
