Israel and Germany Successfully Test Advanced Long-Range Drone
Israel and Germany have significantly strengthened their defense cooperation with the successful testing of a long-range loitering munition. The demonstration, held in early September 2026, showcased the SkyStriker system, known as Sharkerk under a joint project between Israel's Elbit Systems and Germany's Deal Defense. This event highlights growing European interest in autonomous weapons systems.
During the trials, the SkyStriker demonstrated its capability to autonomously detect, track, and engage targets. A key feature tested was the successful transfer of control over a distance of 80 kilometers. The munition was launched from a specialized container for reconnaissance and surveillance before striking a simulated target. Its operational range exceeds 200 kilometers, and it can remain airborne for over two hours. The system's electric motor ensures low acoustic and thermal detectability, making it suitable for high-precision strikes against targets like anti-aircraft systems and mobile military assets.
The SkyStriker's versatility allows for launch from various platforms, including ground vehicles, specialized containers, aircraft, and the Euro-PULS launchers used by German and other European forces. Gunnar Pappert, head of Deal Defense's ground division, stated that the successful demonstration confirmed the system's technological maturity and adaptability. He added that collaboration with Elbit Systems aims to establish local production capabilities in Germany.
Elbit Systems views the German partnership as a crucial step for the project's expansion in Europe. Marian Rachov, CEO of Elbit Systems Germany, expressed confidence in offering the system to various countries based on their specific requirements. "This demonstration is another important milestone for Rooster in Europe and on the path to serial production in Germany," Rachov stated, referring to the project. The companies anticipate that this cooperation will help meet the increasing European demand for autonomous systems, potentially leading to manufacturing, integration, and certification facilities in Germany.
