A four-year-old boy from Holon is hospitalized in serious condition at Wolfson Medical Center due to an invasive meningococcal infection. The child arrived at the pediatric emergency room with rapidly developing symptoms and was diagnosed with the severe bacterial infection. His condition is currently stable.

Dr. Diana Tcher, head of pediatrics at Wolfson, described the meningococcus bacteria as one of the most aggressive and dangerous infections in pediatric medicine. She warned that the bacteria can attack a healthy individual and lead to system collapse, septic shock, and life-threatening conditions within hours.

The meningococcus bacteria resides in the throat of 10-20% of the population and can sometimes transition from being a carrier to an active infection. This can lead to meningitis or sepsis (blood poisoning) when the bacteria enters the bloodstream or nervous system. The initial symptoms, such as fever, weakness, muscle aches, or headaches, are often non-specific and mimic a common viral illness, but the disease can escalate dramatically within 24 to 48 hours, making early diagnosis and treatment critical.

Infants aged 0-2, as well as individuals in crowded living conditions or those with compromised immune systems, are at higher risk. Dr. Tcher urged parents and medical staff to be vigilant for warning signs like a stiff neck, apathy, or petechial rash (red-purple spots that don't disappear when pressed), and to seek immediate medical attention if these appear.

Israel offers a vaccine against meningococcus strain B, the most common strain in the country. While not part of the routine vaccination schedule, it is highly recommended for all children up to age five, particularly those under two.
