  • Four-year-old hospitalized with severe meningococcus infection.
  • Doctors warn of the bacteria's rapid and life-threatening potential.
  • Early detection is crucial but symptoms can mimic viral illness.
  • Warning signs include stiff neck, apathy, and specific rash.
  • Vaccine available for common strain B, recommended for children under five.

A four-year-old child from Holon has been hospitalized in serious condition at the Wolfson Medical Center's pediatric emergency room after contracting a severe invasive infection from the meningococcus bacteria. The child arrived at the hospital after symptoms developed rapidly, with the infection being diagnosed after a series of tests. The child's condition is currently stable.

Dr. Diana Tcher, head of pediatrics at Wolfson, described the severity of the illness, stating, "This is one of the most violent, dangerous, and rapidly progressing infections we know in pediatric medicine." She explained that the meningococcus bacteria can attack a healthy individual and lead to system collapse, septic shock, and a life-threatening situation within hours.

The bacteria naturally resides in the throat of 10-20% of the population but can transition to active disease, entering the bloodstream or nervous system to cause sepsis or meningitis. Early detection is challenging as initial symptoms mimic a common viral illness, including fever, weakness, and muscle or headaches. However, a patient's condition can deteriorate dramatically within 24 to 48 hours, making any diagnostic delay critical.

Wolfson is urging parents and medical staff to be vigilant for warning signs requiring urgent medical attention, such as a stiff neck, apathy, or a petechial rash (red-purple spots that don't fade when pressed). The disease most commonly affects children under two, as well as those in crowded living conditions or with compromised immune systems.

Medical officials remind the public that a vaccine against strain B of the bacteria, the most common strain in Israel, is available. While not part of the routine vaccination schedule, it is recommended for all children up to age five.
