Israel Deploys AI System to Enhance Border Security in West Bank

The Israeli military is implementing a new artificial intelligence system called "Yanai" in Judea and Samaria (West Bank) to improve threat detection and response times. Developed by the Border Defense Corps, Yanai integrates data from multiple sources, including cameras, thermal imaging, radar, and drones, to create a comprehensive operational picture.

The system utilizes computer vision and AI to identify unusual movements and generate real-time alerts for potential threats such as explosive device placement, stone-throwing, or attempted infiltrations. Once a threat is detected, Yanai pinpoints its coordinates and transmits the information directly to ground forces and patrol vehicles, significantly reducing the time between detection and response.

Yanai was developed by officers familiar with operational centers and the work of observation posts, and it has been specifically adapted to the complex urban and rural environment of Judea and Samaria. The system was initially piloted a year ago in the Ephraim regional brigade and is now being gradually rolled out to other operational centers in the region.

A key challenge addressed by Yanai is filtering out "noise" from ordinary movements, such as vehicles, agricultural activity, and even vegetation, which can lead to false alarms. By reducing this background information, the system allows operators to focus on genuine threats, thereby lowering cognitive load. Yanai also digitally records incident stages, aiding in post-incident analysis, identifying patterns, and refining ground force tactics.

An army representative stated that the goal is to enhance the capabilities of observation post operators, enabling them to process more information, detect deviations faster, and provide ground forces with an accurate, real-time situation assessment. The ultimate objective is to shorten the reaction time from threat identification to the deployment of forces, thereby improving threat interception, maintaining stability, and preserving normal life in the region.
