Israeli Forces Kill Lebanese Civilian, Shell Southern Lebanon
A Lebanese civilian was killed on Monday during Israeli military attacks across several areas in southern Lebanon, according to the Lebanese National News Agency (NNA). The NNA reported that the individual died in the town of Barchit after being shot by Israeli forces who were combing the area with machine guns. The Israeli military also fired heavy machine gun rounds towards the outskirts of Barchit and Shaqra, in the Bint Jbeil district, reportedly to intimidate residents who had returned to their homes.
In addition to the fatal shooting, Israeli artillery shelled the town of Al-Mansouri intermittently. The Israeli army also conducted machine-gun sweeps toward Beit Yahoun and shelled the outskirts of Hadata. In the Nabatieh district, artillery fire targeted the outskirts of Arnon and the Al-Dair neighborhood in Nabatieh Al-Fawqa. The Wadi Al-Sluqi area, spanning the Bint Jbeil and Marjayoun districts, was also subjected to Israeli artillery shelling. An Israeli airstrike targeted the Al-Jarmaq road in the Jezzine district, though no casualties were reported.
These incidents occur amid ongoing escalation in southern Lebanon, despite diplomatic efforts to contain the situation and reach a ceasefire. The attacks follow an "framework agreement" signed by Beirut and Tel Aviv on June 26, which stipulated an Israeli withdrawal from occupied territories in exchange for the deployment of the Lebanese army. Israel has occupied areas in southern Lebanon since the 2023-2024 war and expanded its presence within Lebanese territory during its ongoing aggression since March.
