IDF Rejects Claims in 'NezA' Film About Gaza Operations and AI

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has issued a sharp response to the film 'NezA', which features anonymous testimonies allegedly from soldiers of Unit 8200. The film, screened at the Venice Film Festival, raises claims about the use of artificial intelligence in selecting targets in Gaza and the extensive killing of civilians, allegations the IDF categorically denies.

The IDF stated that the anonymity of the interviewees makes it impossible to verify their identities, their service in the military, their roles, or the basis of their claims. The military also pointed out that some of the statements in the film concern national and military strategy, which would be beyond the knowledge of junior soldiers. Furthermore, the IDF noted that some interviewees, purportedly from intelligence units, would not have had access to the information discussed or been involved in such matters based on their roles.

The military also highlighted alleged contradictions and absurdities within the testimonies. It specifically refuted the film's portrayal of unintentional harm from lawful strikes as deliberate or part of a 'genocide,' stating this demonstrates a misunderstanding of the terms. The IDF also rejected claims regarding the use of AI in target selection, unequivocally stating that all decisions regarding strikes are made solely by human personnel according to IDF directives, not by artificial intelligence.

The IDF reiterated that its operations in Gaza are defensive, aimed at protecting Israeli civilians from terrorist organizations like Hamas, and are conducted in accordance with international law. The military asserted that unprecedented efforts are made to minimize civilian harm, while blaming Hamas for operating systematically within civilian populations and using them for military purposes.

Regarding potential violations by soldiers, the IDF stated that concrete suspicions are investigated by its independent enforcement mechanisms. The military emphasized that soldiers are obligated to report any observed violations, and this duty also applies to those interviewed for the film, providing a channel for their claims to be examined if they possess substantive information.
