Oldest Holocaust Survivor in Israel, Yehuda Aaron Widawski, Dies at 107
Yehuda Aaron Widawski, recognized as the oldest Holocaust survivor in Israel and a dedicated restorer of Jewish cemeteries in Poland, has passed away at the age of 107. Born in 1919 in Turek, near Lodz, Poland, to a religious Zionist family, Widawski survived the Auschwitz concentration camp and other Nazi forced labor camps.
He immigrated to Israel in 1950. In 1978, Widawski returned to Poland, dedicating decades to locating, documenting, and restoring Jewish cemeteries and graves. His efforts led to the identification of over 3,000 graves, establishing him as a prominent figure in this field.
Widawski's significant contributions were recognized in 2012 when he was chosen to light a torch at the official state ceremony commemorating Holocaust Remembrance Day. He passed away at the age of 107.
