Israeli Culture Minister Vows to Revoke Citizenship of Filmmakers Over Venice Award
Israel's Minister of Culture and Sport, Miki Zohar, announced Sunday evening that he intends to revoke the citizenship of Yuval Abraham and Rachel Shore, the creators of the film "No Other Land" (translated from Hebrew as "Nez'a"). The decision follows the film's win of the Jury Prize at the 83rd Venice Film Festival.
Zohar expressed his shock and disgust at the film's award, calling it "despicable" and stating that the filmmakers' "burning self-hatred" in harming their homeland for international applause is "inconceivable" and constitutes "betrayal of the country."
He further linked this action to his efforts to reform cinema funding, asserting that Israeli citizens should no longer subsidize content that harms IDF soldiers and the State of Israel. As Culture Minister, Zohar stated he would "immediately act to revoke the Israeli citizenship of these vile creators for treason against the country."
