IDF Withdraws from Mount Ali Taher After Destroying Hezbollah Tunnels

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has withdrawn to the Beaufort Ridge in southern Lebanon following the destruction of extensive tunnel networks at the Mount Ali Taher ridge, according to Kan News. This withdrawal is described as a localized and specific move, with ongoing discussions between the military and political leadership regarding the future deployment of forces along the border. The IDF is expected to reduce its troop presence in the area by one brigade.

The operation to destroy the tunnels, which lasted several weeks, culminated on Thursday night with the successful demolition of the underground complex. The IDF had previously released new footage from the site, highlighting the prolonged nature of the operation. Following the capture of the Beaufort Ridge and crossing the Litani River, forces from the 36th Division launched an offensive against Hezbollah infrastructure, built by Iran, north of the river.

IDF officials stated that the Mount Ali Taher tunnels served as Hezbollah's central command hub, extending towards Dahieh in Beirut. The complex housed dozens of Hezbollah operatives and was described as a massive underground military base. The IDF's strategy involved a phased approach, starting with disrupting surveillance capabilities, then targeting tunnel entrances to trap militants, and finally clearing the tunnels themselves, utilizing air support and drones.

During the operation, the IDF discovered drones, anti-tank missiles, and other weaponry within the tunnels. Over 1,100 tons of explosives were used to destroy the eight underground tunnels, which collectively spanned more than 5,400 meters. Soldiers from the elite Yahalom unit described the operation as the most complex they had experienced, noting that they had to map the complex as they advanced into it.

Approximately 50 militants were killed within the complex, while some managed to escape amidst the fog. The Egoz commando unit conducted ambushes near tunnel exits, eliminating some of the fleeing militants at close range. The IDF also thwarted Hezbollah's attempts to resupply or rescue those trapped in the tunnels. The IDF reported that trapped militants were offered a chance to surrender but refused and were subsequently eliminated. Israel had informed the United States of the operation, who in turn updated the Lebanese government.
