Saudi Arabia Seeks Indirect Israeli Intelligence Aid Against Houthis

Saudi Arabia is reportedly seeking indirect intelligence support from Israel to counter Houthi threats in the Bab al-Mandab strait, according to diplomatic sources. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has made requests for assistance to several Middle Eastern nations, with indirect overtures also extended to Israel via the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM).

The requests aim to prevent the Houthis from closing the vital Bab al-Mandab strait, which, along with the Strait of Hormuz and a land route to the Red Sea, forms Saudi Arabia's three critical oil export pathways now under simultaneous threat. This strategic dilemma has prompted Saudi Arabia to consider a temporary settlement with Iran, facilitated by Oman, to ensure navigation through Hormuz, though this is seen as an emergency measure rather than a fundamental solution.

Adding to Saudi Arabia's challenges, the United States has reportedly refused a direct military intervention request to counter Houthi advances in the Bab al-Mandab region. This U.S. stance is concerning for Riyadh, as its key strategic ally appears hesitant to provide the expected military support amid multiple threats to its export routes.

The ongoing diplomatic talks in Oman between Gulf foreign ministers and Iran's foreign minister are interpreted as a veiled message to Washington. While Gulf states are not seeking to align with Iran, they are unwilling to wait indefinitely for U.S. action and may pursue partial, potentially problematic, settlements with Tehran if no American solution emerges.
