IDF Simulates Major Terror Attack on Eilat Following October 7 Lessons

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) recently conducted large-scale exercises in southern Israel, simulating a severe attack scenario on the city of Eilat. This drill focused on a multi-pronged invasion involving simultaneous infiltration by armed groups from the sea, land, and air, leading to the seizure of civilian facilities and numerous hostages. The exercise's design was heavily influenced by the lessons learned from the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack.

The maneuvers, reported by Maariv, encompassed Eilat, the Arava region, and the borders with Jordan and Egypt. They involved ground forces, the Navy, the Air Force, police, rescue services, and other security agencies. A key scenario involved armed militants infiltrating Eilat's hotel district, simulating the takeover of a hotel with Israeli and foreign nationals. Following the simulated hostage-taking, forces practiced neutralizing the attackers, rescuing hostages, and simultaneously repelling assaults on other fronts. Infiltration of educational institutions and other civilian sites was also practiced.

Special attention was given to the maritime threat, with exercises modeling the approach of multiple enemy vessels towards Eilat's coast for armed group landings. The Navy was tasked with detecting and intercepting these vessels before they reached shore. This reflects the October 7 attempt by Hamas terrorists to infiltrate Israel by sea near Zikim beach, as well as a recent incident in early June where an Israeli naval vessel fired upon a suspicious, fast-moving craft heading towards Eilat, which then altered course towards Jordan.

Following the October 7 attacks, the IDF's approach to border defense has fundamentally changed. The military now operates under the assumption that even the most extreme scenarios are possible and must be prepared for, regardless of peaceful relations with neighboring countries like Egypt and Jordan. The exercises included simulated border breaches, drone attacks, sea landings, missile strikes, facility seizures, mass casualties, and helicopter evacuations.

Eilat presents unique defensive challenges due to its remote location, proximity to two international borders, and extensive coastline. Reinforcing the city and evacuating casualties could be time-consuming during a large-scale assault. The city's hotel district and promenade, capable of hosting tens of thousands of tourists, amplify the potential consequences of attacks on civilian infrastructure. Consequently, a central focus of the drills was enhancing coordination between the army, navy, air force, police, and civilian services to ensure a swift and integrated response.
