IDF Simulates 'Eilat's October 7th' Attack in Large-Scale Drill

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) recently conducted a large-scale, multi-branch exercise simulating a combined attack on Eilat and the Arava region, mirroring the scenarios of the October 7th Hamas assault. The drill involved ground, air, and naval units, alongside the police, the Counter-Terrorism Unit (CTU), and other security forces, focusing on inter-agency cooperation.

The exercise simulated various threats, including a coordinated sea-borne infiltration aimed at hotels and the Eilat boardwalk, with the objective of taking foreign tourists hostage. Naval forces, including the Snapper and Dvora missile boats, practiced intercepting multiple small vessels approaching the coast. Air Force support was also integrated, providing aerial reconnaissance, combat helicopter operations, and logistical transport.

Simulated enemy forces attempted to seize assets and control territory, with the IDF forces tasked with defending civilian communities and existing infrastructure. The drill also included scenarios within educational institutions and hotels, emphasizing the need for rapid response to hostage situations involving both Israelis and foreign nationals.

Officials stated the exercise aimed to enhance preparedness for complex threats along Israel's southern border, particularly given Eilat's proximity to two international borders and its reliance on tourism. Lessons learned from the October 7th attacks, such as preventing coastal infiltrations like the one at Zikim beach, were incorporated into the training. The drill concluded with an assessment of its effectiveness, highlighting the ongoing need for rigorous training to maintain a high level of operational readiness.
