Jamaican 'Messi' Maalique Foster's Remarkable Journey Since Leaving Israel

Maalique Foster, once dubbed the 'Jamaican Messi' during his brief stint with Hapoel Ironi Kiryat Shmona in Israel's top league, has experienced a dramatic career resurgence in the United States after leaving the Israeli club without scoring a single goal. His journey since departing Israel in 2020 has been a rollercoaster of near-career-ending injuries, a violent shooting incident, and ultimately, a remarkable transformation into a leading scorer.

After leaving Kiryat Shmona, Foster faced immediate setbacks. He failed a medical for a potential move to San Carlos in Costa Rica due to a chronic hip injury, leading to the termination of his contract. Shortly after, while in his native Jamaica, he was shot and injured during a domino game that resulted in two fatalities. Despite these life-threatening events and a subsequent knee injury, Foster signed with Sacramento Republic FC in the USL Championship, the second tier of American soccer.

In Sacramento, Foster began to showcase his potential, scoring crucial goals and gaining recognition. A pivotal moment came in the U.S. Open Cup semi-final against Sporting Kansas City, where he scored a Panenka penalty in a shootout, followed by a somersault and a 'Night Night' celebration, a move that went viral and earned him Play of the Year honors for Sacramento. Foster continued his career in the USL Championship, moving to Colorado Springs Switchbacks and then Indy Eleven.
