Jamaican 'Messi' Maalique Foster's Remarkable Journey Since Leaving Israeli League

Maalique Foster, once dubbed the 'Jamaican Messi' during his brief stint with Hapoel Ironi Kiryat Shmona in Israel's Premier League, has experienced a dramatic career resurgence in the United States after leaving the club without scoring a single goal. His journey since departing Israel in 2020 has been a rollercoaster of near-career-ending injuries, a violent shooting incident, and ultimately, a remarkable transformation into a top scorer in the USL Championship.

After failing to make an impact in Israel, Foster's career hit immediate roadblocks. In 2020, he faced a chronic hip injury that scuttled a move to San Carlos in Costa Rica and led to the termination of his contract with Alajuelense. Shortly after, he was shot and wounded in his hometown of Portmore, Jamaica, during a dominoes game that left two others dead. Despite these severe setbacks, Foster signed with Sacramento Republic FC of the USL Championship in December 2020.

Foster's time with Sacramento was marked by further injuries, including a torn posterior cruciate ligament, but also by significant achievements. He became a key player, scoring a memorable winning goal just minutes after coming on as a substitute and later netting a brace in three minutes. His defining moment came in the U.S. Open Cup semifinal against Sporting Kansas City, where he scored a Panenka penalty in a shootout, followed by a somersault and a 'Night Night' celebration, leading Sacramento to the final as the first non-MLS team to do so. His career continued to evolve with moves to Colorado Springs Switchbacks and Indy Eleven, where he maintained consistent offensive output and earned a recall to the Jamaican national team in November 2023 after a four-year absence. In January 2024, he joined Charleston Battery, where under coach Ben Pirmann's guidance, he has transformed into a prolific goalscorer. Currently, Foster leads his team with 11 goals and 3 assists in 28 appearances, positioning him as a strong contender for the league's top scorer award and leading Charleston Battery in their pursuit of the championship.
