Israel-Lebanon Maritime Talks Postponed to October

Negotiations between Israel and Lebanon regarding maritime border demarcation, initially scheduled for Rome, have been postponed until October. The discussions will instead take place at the U.S. State Department in Washington, D.C., according to Axios, citing an official. The delay is attributed to the Jewish holidays, the Paris conference supporting the Lebanese army, and preparations for the UN General Assembly meetings.

These talks are part of an American-brokered framework agreement signed on June 26, following five previous rounds in Washington. The agreement aims for Hezbollah's disarmament and a gradual Israeli withdrawal from occupied southern Lebanese territories, coinciding with the deployment of the Lebanese army in two pilot zones.

The postponement occurs amidst ongoing escalation in southern Lebanon, with Israel intensifying its raids in recent days, despite the ongoing negotiation track. This follows Israel's destruction of a Hezbollah tunnel network beneath the Al-Tahir heights in southern Lebanon, increasing the fragility of the existing ceasefire between the two sides.
