Israelis Spend Hundreds of Millions on Rosh Hashanah Eve Shopping Spree
Israelis spent over NIS 459 million (approximately $125 million USD) on credit cards in just three hours on the eve of Rosh Hashanah, indicating a robust holiday shopping season. Shopping centers, food chains, and stores nationwide saw thousands of shoppers completing their final preparations for the Jewish New Year.
Data from Sheba, the national debit card payment system, revealed a consistent upward trend in public spending compared to previous years. Between 8:00 AM and 11:00 AM on Rosh Hashanah eve, credit card spending reached NIS 459 million, a 2.7% increase from the previous year when spending was approximately NIS 446.8 million. This follows a steady rise from Rosh Hashanah eve in 2023 (NIS 422.9 million) and 2022 (NIS 378.4 million) before the outbreak of the "Swords of Iron" war.
The peak shopping hour occurred just before noon. At 10:56 AM, over 18,000 transactions were processed in a single minute, totaling more than NIS 3.44 million.
