Suspect Arrested in Serial Car Thefts in Ariel Following Public Outcry
Israeli police announced the arrest of a suspect in connection with a series of vehicle thefts in the West Bank settlement of Ariel. The announcement followed a public post by right-wing activist Ayelet Lach, who detailed her claims of a car theft from a supermarket parking lot in Ariel and raised concerns about the extent of car thefts in the city.
In response to Lach's post, which gained traction on social media, police confirmed to Channel 7 that an investigation was opened into the reported thefts. "Following reports of vehicle thefts in Ariel, including in parking lots, an investigation was launched, during which various actions led to the arrest of a suspect suspected of involvement in these incidents," a police statement read. The police did not specify the exact incidents the suspect is linked to or the fate of the vehicle Lach's post described.
Police also stated that officers from the Judea and Samaria district are "constantly working to thwart vehicle thefts and arrest suspects," citing over 20 attempted car thefts foiled in the district in the past week. They further reported a significant decrease in such offenses this year, with a "dramatic 24% drop" attributed to focused efforts by all police districts, including the Etgar unit.
Lach's post recounted an incident where a man's car was stolen from the Mega Or mall parking lot in Ariel while his wife was shopping. She claimed the wife received a notification that someone was tampering with her car, rushed out, and called the police. According to Lach, police spotted the vehicle still within Ariel and heading towards the exit. When the wife requested they stop it, she was allegedly told, "We cannot risk human lives over a car theft." Lach claimed the car entered the Palestinian village of Salfit less than a minute after leaving Ariel.
Lach also criticized the response when the wife filed a complaint, stating a police officer told her, "You are not the first today," and explained that cars are stolen from the parking lot daily. She strongly condemned the authorities, questioning how Palestinians from Salfit are allegedly allowed back into the Ariel mall complex, raising fears of potential security threats beyond vehicle theft.
