John Malkovich Cancels Israel Performance Over Fabricated Quote
Renowned American actor John Malkovich has canceled his upcoming performance in Tel Aviv after organizers attributed a fabricated quote to him. The quote, which expressed strong positive sentiments towards Israel and its audience, appeared in a press release and was subsequently reported by Israeli and American media. Malkovich stated to The Hollywood Reporter that he never uttered these words and that the text was not approved by him, nor did it reflect his feelings. "For this reason, I decided that I cannot participate in the performance in Tel Aviv," he said.
The producer of the show, Alon Yurik, acknowledged the error, attributing it to a "human factor." He stated that organizers had contacted media outlets to remove the quote and issue corrections, and had also offered apologies. "I regret that this story reached the point where the performance was canceled," Yurik commented.
Malkovich was scheduled to perform "The Music Critic" in Tel Aviv in April 2027. This theatrical production combines classical music with critical commentary on famous composers. Malkovich has performed in Israel before, previously stating that his appearances in a country do not signify endorsement of its political leadership or policies.
This incident occurs amidst a trend where several international artists and film industry figures have recently withdrawn from engagements or collaborations with Israel, citing the war in Gaza and the situation in the West Bank. Notably, this year's annual Israel Festival took place without any foreign artists participating for the first time.
Malkovich, a two-time Oscar nominee, is known for his roles in films such as "Dangerous Liaisons," "In the Line of Fire," and "Con Air." He also played a fictionalized version of himself in the 1999 film "Being John Malkovich."
