Toyota Recalls 10,000 Electric C-HR Models in North America Over Software Glitch
Toyota has announced a recall affecting approximately 10,000 electric C-HR vehicles in North America due to a software issue that could cause the car to lose power while driving. The problem is linked to the battery management software and can occur during regenerative braking, a process where the electric motor helps slow the car and recharges the battery. If the battery is nearly full, the software glitch might allow too much electricity to flow into it, potentially causing the powertrain to shut down.
The recall specifically targets the 2026 model year electric C-HR sold in North America, with about 1,310 units in Canada and the remainder in the United States. The total number of vehicles included in the recall exceeds the number already delivered to customers in the U.S., as it also encompasses vehicles still in inventory. Owners of the affected vehicles are expected to be notified by early November.
The fix does not require replacing the battery or powertrain components. Instead, owners will need to bring their vehicles to a dealership where the electronic control unit software will be updated free of charge. The electric C-HR returned to the U.S. market for the 2026 model year as a fully electric vehicle, distinct from the hybrid C-HR model known in other markets, including Israel. Toyota has stated that there has been no announcement regarding the hybrid version in Israel being part of this recall.
The 2026 electric C-HR is equipped with dual motors producing 338 horsepower, a 74.7 kWh battery, and offers an official range of up to approximately 467 kilometers (290 miles) for the base model. Pricing starts around $37,000 before taxes and options.
