AI Revolution Drives Israeli Energy Firm Toward Fossil Fuels
Ofer Yanai, CEO of Nofar Energy, is pivoting the company, originally focused on renewable energy, to embrace traditional fossil fuels, driven by the immense energy demands of the artificial intelligence (AI) revolution. Yanai stated that entering the AI sector necessitates building expertise, and the acquisition of Reindeer, a project for a large private power station, marks the first step in this new direction.
Yanai explained that renewable energy sources like solar power are insufficient for the 24/7 energy needs of data centers, especially during nighttime and winter months. The scale of energy storage required for renewables to meet these demands would be economically unfeasible. He acknowledged the paradox of an "AI revolution" leading back to fossil fuels but asserted that while a full return to fossil fuels is unlikely, AI ensures their continued relevance for many years.
Nofar Energy, which went public six years ago at a valuation of NIS 2 billion and is now worth approximately NIS 7 billion, aims to reach a NIS 16 billion valuation by the end of 2028. Yanai has set an ambitious personal target that could yield him a NIS 760 million salary package if achieved. The company's strategy now involves a dedicated "Nofar AI" arm focusing on fossil fuels, requiring separate capital raising.
Yanai also discussed the challenges and opportunities in the energy sector, including the impact of U.S. federal tax credit policies on renewable energy projects and the strain AI places on global energy systems. He suggested that small modular nuclear reactors could be a viable solution for Israel's future energy needs, and Nofar is exploring this area. The company is also advancing plans to establish its own data center in Shoham.
Beyond his business ventures, Yanai is also the owner of the Hapoel Tel Aviv basketball team. He described his leadership style as challenging the status quo and adapting to future trends, drawing parallels between his business and sports endeavors. He aims to elevate Hapoel Tel Aviv to European standards while also fostering a more competitive landscape in Israeli basketball.
