Leaked Recording Exposes Alleged Plot to Manipulate Rabbinical Arbitration
A leaked internal recording from the Toldedot Yehuda community, led by Rabbi Mordechai Menashe Zilber, has ignited controversy within rabbinical courts. The recording allegedly reveals a strategy to shift a rabbinical arbitration case concerning the use of the 'Stotshin' name from the United States to Israel, replace arbitrators, and prolong the proceedings.
The dispute stems from Rabbi Zilber's historical connection to the Stotshin Hasidic dynasty. After the passing of the previous Stotshin Rebbe, who had brought Rabbi Zilber into the fold, Rabbi Zilber established a separate community and took a group of followers with him. In recent years, this group began operating under the 'Stotshin' name, establishing institutions and a community around it, leading to legal battles over the name's usage.
For the past nine months, the case has moved through rabbinical courts, starting with the Union of Rabbis in the US and later the Edah HaChareidis rabbinical court in Jerusalem. Despite repeated summonses, Rabbi Zilber's followers initially failed to appear for hearings, leading to rulings against their use of the 'Stotshin' name. They eventually agreed to re-engage with the process shortly before Rabbi Zilber's visit to Israel.
The Edah HaChareidis proposed a three-arbitrator panel, but disagreements led the court to appoint Rabbi Shimon Yitzchak Schlesinger as the neutral arbitrator. Rabbi Zalman Gross was appointed arbitrator for Stotshin, and Rabbi Eliyahu Vidislovsky for Rabbi Zilber. However, the process stalled again, with Rabbi Zilber's side allegedly refusing to attend further sessions.
Recently, the Edah HaChareidis issued another ruling and a deadline for compliance. On the final day, Rabbi Zilber's representatives appeared, but immediately demanded to replace their arbitrator, proposing Rabbi Chaim Aharon Munderer, the Kossov Rebbe of Beit Shemesh, instead of Rabbi Vidislovsky. The arbitration was set to take place in the US.
The leaked recording, however, suggests a different plan. The speaker in the recording purportedly outlines a strategy to move the arbitration to Israel, arguing that an Israeli arbitrator might be less familiar with the background of the dispute and the significance of the 'Stotshin' name in the US, where there is strong support for the current Stotshin Rebbe and a consensus that Rabbi Zilber does not represent the name. In Israel, conversely, Rabbi Zilber reportedly has support from certain circles. The recording further details a plan to replace arbitrators, including the proposed Rabbi Munderer, to deliberately drag out the proceedings, while simultaneously continuing to establish community institutions and operate under the 'Stotshin' name.
This revelation has caused an uproar. A senior rabbinical source from the Edah HaChareidis condemned the alleged "malicious plan" and the continued "brazen behavior of disregard and harm to the rabbinical courts." Conversely, Rabbi Zilber's community claims the speaker is not authorized and denies any such plan. The Stotshin Hasidut stated they are not concerned about such extreme measures, trusting the rabbinical courts to prevent them if necessary.
