Senior Hamas Terrorist, Released in Shalit Deal, Eliminated in Gaza
Palestinian reports indicate that Faraj Hamad, a veteran militant in Hamas's military wing, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, was killed in an airstrike in Gaza City. Hamad, born in 1976 in the village of Silwad near Ramallah, was reportedly riding a motorcycle on Al-Rashid Street when the strike occurred.
He joined Hamas around the year 2000 and became involved in terrorist activities during the Second Intifada as part of a local cell. Hamad was arrested in 2003 for his involvement in attacks that resulted in the deaths of Israelis and was subsequently sentenced to seven life terms in prison.
In 2011, he was released as part of the prisoner exchange deal for abducted Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit and was exiled to Gaza. According to reports, Hamad continued his activities within the terrorist organization even after his expulsion. He was also reportedly slated as a candidate on the Hamas list for the Palestinian elections that were planned for 2021.
The report suggests that Hamad's elimination prevents him from returning to terrorism.
