IDF Eliminates Hamas Commander Released in Shalit Deal
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced today the elimination of a senior Hamas military wing official, Farhat Hamad, in an airstrike on a motorcycle in western Gaza. Hamad, 43, was identified as one of the leaders of the Salwad cell, which was released as part of the 2011 Gilad Shalit prisoner exchange deal and subsequently exiled to the Gaza Strip.
Hamad had been sentenced to three life terms for his involvement in attacks that resulted in the deaths of IDF soldiers and civilians, including Shalom Har-Melech. Following his expulsion to Gaza, he became a prominent figure in Hamas's West Bank headquarters, directing attacks against Israel from within the Strip.
