Santos' NCAA Eligibility Uncertain Amid Pro League Salary Concerns

Four months after committing to Louisiana State University (LSU), basketball player Marcio Santos' official announcement has yet to be made, raising questions about his eligibility for the NCAA. Similar to the case of Noam Yaacov, Santos may be ineligible to play due to his past participation in professional leagues, which could violate NCAA regulations.

Sports Illustrated reported that salaries in European leagues, such as the EuroLeague, likely exceed NCAA guidelines, casting significant doubt on the eligibility of players like Santos. The LSU roster currently lists only four players, with the futures of several other potential recruits, including Santos, uncertain.

Among those whose status is unclear are Salifou Niang, a 22-year-old forward who played for Virtus Bologna, and center Brice Dessers, who was with Anadolu Efes. Both have committed to LSU but have not been officially announced.

Santos was reportedly set to receive a gross salary of $3 million per season in the U.S., with Maccabi Tel Aviv expected to earn $750,000 from the transfer. While awaiting a decision on his eligibility, Santos played for the Brazilian national team during the recent FIBA World Cup qualifiers, contributing 9 points and 8 rebounds against the Dominican Republic and 8 points and 4 rebounds against Mexico.
