Ex-Maccabi Player Marcius Santos Faces NCAA Eligibility Issues

Four months after committing to Louisiana State University (LSU), former Maccabi Tel Aviv player Marcius Santos has not yet been officially announced by the college basketball program. This delay stems from NCAA regulations concerning players with prior professional league experience, which could render Santos ineligible. Sports Illustrated noted that salaries in European leagues, like the EuroLeague, likely exceed new NCAA guidelines, casting significant doubt on the eligibility of players like Santos.

Santos, who reportedly agreed to a contract worth $3 million gross per season with LSU, faces a situation similar to that of Noam Yaacov, another player whose NCAA eligibility is in question due to his professional past. The potential loss of Santos, along with other prospective recruits like Salif Niang and Bryce Dessner, leaves LSU with only four players currently listed on their roster.

In addition to his potential NCAA issues, Santos played for the Brazilian national team during the recent FIBA World Cup qualifiers over the summer. He recorded 9 points and 8 rebounds in a loss to the Dominican Republic and contributed 8 points and 4 rebounds in a defeat against Mexico.

Maccabi Tel Aviv was also set to benefit financially from Santos's move, expecting to receive $750,000 from the transfer.
