Ex-Maccabi Player Marcius Santos Faces NCAA Eligibility Issues

Four months after committing to Louisiana State University (LSU), former Maccabi Tel Aviv player Marcius Santos has yet to be officially announced by the college basketball program. This delay stems from NCAA regulations concerning players with prior professional league experience, which could render Santos ineligible. Sports Illustrated reported that salaries in European leagues, like the EuroLeague, likely exceed new NCAA guidelines, casting significant doubt on the eligibility of Santos and other similar players.

Santos was reportedly set to earn a gross salary of $3 million per season in the U.S., with Maccabi Tel Aviv expected to receive a transfer fee of $750,000. His situation mirrors that of another player, Noam Yaacov, who also faces potential ineligibility for NCAA play due to his professional past.

LSU's roster currently lists only four players, with the futures of several other recruits, including Salif Niang and Bryce Deser, also uncertain pending eligibility rulings. While awaiting a decision, Santos played for the Brazilian national team during the recent FIBA World Cup qualifiers, contributing 9 points and 8 rebounds against the Dominican Republic and 8 points and 4 rebounds against Mexico.
