Israeli Company Unveils EROS NOVA Earth Observation Satellite with Onboard AI
ImageSat International (ISI), an Israeli company, has introduced its new EROS NOVA Earth observation and intelligence satellite. The satellite is designed to capture imagery with a resolution of up to 25 centimeters and operate across visible and short-wave infrared spectrums. It will also be capable of recording video and processing some of its collected data directly in orbit using artificial intelligence.
According to ISI, EROS NOVA will support multiple imaging modes, including spot, strip, mosaic, and stereoscopic photography, alongside standard and infrared video. The satellite will have a 10-kilometer imaging swath width and weigh approximately 425 kilograms. The inclusion of the short-wave infrared (SWIR) band allows for the acquisition of information not obtainable through conventional optical imaging.
A significant feature of EROS NOVA is its onboard data processing capability. Integrated AI algorithms will enable the satellite to analyze and select the most critical data before transmission to Earth. This is expected to reduce the time lag between detecting an object or event and receiving actionable intelligence, as reported by Israel Defense.
EROS NOVA will join ISI's existing satellite systems, which include the RUNNER and KNIGHT platforms. ISI CEO Noam Segal stated that the new satellite integrates high-resolution imaging, multiple sensor types, and onboard intelligent data processing into a single platform. The launch date for EROS NOVA has not yet been announced.
