Top Rabbis Urge Action Against Dangerous Driving, Mobile Phone Use

Leading rabbis in Bnei Brak have issued a strong letter condemning dangerous driving and the use of mobile phones while operating a vehicle. Published in the newspaper "Yated Ne'eman," the letter, titled "And You Shall Greatly Guard Yourselves for Your Lives," emphasizes that individuals witnessing such reckless behavior are obligated to warn the driver.

If the driver persists, the rabbis state, one must consult a religious authority on how to proceed with revoking their license. The signatories include Rabbi Shriel Rosenberg, Rabbi Yehuda Silman, and Rabbi Yitzchak Mordechai Rubin. They assert that road safety is a religious commandment, and negligence can lead to the severe transgression of bloodshed.

The rabbis specifically addressed the prevalent issue of "drivers," likely referring to bus or taxi drivers, and others using phones while driving. They noted that this distraction endangers passengers and the public. "We must find a way to eradicate this danger from among us," they wrote, questioning how they could otherwise claim innocence.

The letter further states that public roads belong to everyone, and individuals must use them without endangering others. They cited previous rulings from elder rabbis, suggesting that if the Sanhedrin (ancient Jewish high court) were active today, most drivers would be disqualified due to carelessness. The rabbis concluded by urging people to take action against dangerous drivers, even if they are acquaintances, and to seek religious guidance on revoking licenses if the behavior continues.
