Israeli Film 'Independence' Dominates Box Office During Holiday Season
The Israeli comedy-drama "Independence," directed by Moshe Rosenthal, is currently the biggest hit in Israeli cinemas during the Tishrei holiday season. The film, which premiered at the Jerusalem Film Festival and competed at Sundance, is set in 1987 and 1997, exploring a family's turmoil after 12-year-old Boaz uncovers a secret about his father. Years later, an adult Boaz grapples with his past, while his mother struggles to keep the family from falling apart.
"Independence" has garnered widespread critical acclaim and set a record with 16 nominations for the 2026 Ophir Awards, including for its lead actors. The cast features young actor Ido Tako and Assi Cohen in his first major film role in 15 years, alongside Keren Tzur as the complex and compelling mother.
Filmed over three weeks in Holon, the actors immersed themselves in challenging family dynamics, portraying intense confrontations and quiet, emotional moments. Rosenthal, previously praised for his film "Karaoke," marks another significant achievement for Israeli cinema with this work, which is being hailed as one of the year's best films.
