Desert Night Marathon Returns to Mitzpe Ramon Under Full Moon
The popular "Desert Marathon" night race is returning to Mitzpe Ramon on September 24, the night before the Sukkot holiday. Organized by "Schwung" company and the Mitzpe Ramon Local Council, the event is expected to draw thousands of participants.
Mitzpe Ramon, situated at an altitude of approximately 900 meters, is known for its clean air and stunning desert landscapes, making it an attractive location for trail runners and endurance sports enthusiasts. The race is strategically scheduled to coincide with a full moon, promising runners clear skies, low humidity, minimal light pollution, and a picturesque experience through the Negev desert.
The marathon will feature a unique blend of road and trail running, starting and finishing in the "Spice Route Quarter" of Mitzpe Ramon. Routes will pass by local vineyards, olive groves, "Sukkah in the Desert," and the official observatory. Participants can choose from several race categories: a half-marathon (21.1 km) for experienced runners, 10 km and 5 km races for amateurs, and a 5 km "Moon Walk" suitable for families and casual walkers.
Beyond the athletic competition, the event emphasizes a festive atmosphere. Upon crossing the finish line, participants will be greeted with music, refreshments, and a special late-night opening of the arts, culture, and shopping complex in the Spice Route Quarter. Special accommodation deals in Mitzpe Ramon are available for registered runners, and organized transportation from the central region will be provided upon request.
