UAE Aligns with US on Artificial Intelligence Amidst US-China Tech Rivalry

The United Arab Emirates has reportedly chosen to align with the United States in the burgeoning global rivalry over artificial intelligence (AI) with China, according to political analyst Obaid Alzaabi. He stated that the AI race is primarily between the US and China, with the UAE and Israel being the key players in the Middle East. Instead of replicating the US tech ecosystem, Abu Dhabi aims to become a regional hub for AI infrastructure, including energy, data centers, computing power, and capital. This strategy is intended to extend the UAE's influence beyond the Gulf to North and East Africa, Central Asia, the Indian subcontinent, and the Balkans.

The UAE's significant energy resources, including investments in nuclear, solar, and gas, coupled with sovereign wealth funds, provide a strong foundation for financing the costly AI infrastructure. However, a critical component, advanced microchips, remains a dependency on the US, which holds significant leverage over partners seeking cutting-edge AI systems. This dependency forces a geopolitical choice as the US-China rivalry intensifies, making it increasingly difficult for the UAE to maintain neutrality.

Alzaabi emphasized that the US has made it clear that participation in the AI revolution requires exclusive collaboration. "The United Arab Emirates therefore had to choose, and we chose the United States," he stated. The implications extend beyond AI, potentially influencing control over satellites, communication networks, undersea cables, data centers, and even defense infrastructure, possibly leading to distinct technological spheres centered around Washington and Beijing.

The UAE's alignment with the US involves more than just purchasing technology; it includes direct investment in the underlying infrastructure to secure a stake in the system. The ambition is to establish the UAE as the region's primary computing center and a vital link in the US AI ecosystem across Asia and the Middle East. This strategic move may foreshadow a broader dilemma for many nations, facing a choice between American and Chinese technological ecosystems or risking marginalization.
